A well-chosen photograph can completely change the atmosphere of a workspace. We recently printed and framed this striking Lake Como image for a client who wanted a large vertical artwork to fill an empty wall in his Brisbane office.
The photograph features a classic wooden boat in the foreground, with Lake Como’s deep blue-green water, elegant villas and lush gardens beyond. Its strong perspective and vibrant detail made it an ideal feature piece for a larger format.
Selecting the Right Size for the Wall
The client initially considered a smaller print but asked whether we could increase the size to better suit the available office wall.
After reviewing a photograph of the space, we recommended printing the image at approximately 800 × 1120 mm. This preserved the photograph’s original 5:7 proportions while giving the finished artwork enough presence to suit the room. The completed frame measured approximately 940 × 1260 mm.
Choosing the correct scale is an important part of custom framing. An artwork that is too small can feel lost on a large wall, while an oversized piece can overwhelm the room. By considering the wall dimensions, furniture and viewing distance, we created a balanced result.
Printing the Photograph on Ilford Satin Lustre
We printed the Lake Como photograph on Ilford Satin Lustre photographic paper.
This paper provides excellent colour reproduction, fine detail and a smooth satin finish. It gives photographic images a refined appearance without the stronger reflections often associated with high-gloss paper.
The satin surface worked particularly well for this image, allowing the rich greens, warm timber tones and reflective water to remain vivid and detailed.
Creating a Clean White Framing Design
We framed the photograph with a 20 mm white timber frame, a generous white mat board and standard picture-framing glass.
The white frame and mat create a crisp, contemporary border around the colourful photograph. Rather than competing with the image, the neutral presentation draws attention inward and gives the composition room to breathe.
The wide mat also creates visual separation between the photograph and the frame, giving the finished piece a more substantial and considered appearance.
A Statement Piece for the Office
The completed artwork now has the scale and impact needed to anchor the office wall.
The vertical format makes excellent use of the available space, while the bright white framing keeps the presentation fresh and professional. The photograph brings colour, depth and a sense of travel into the workplace without making the room feel overly formal.
This project formed part of a three-piece photographic framing order, which also included two smaller Positano photographs framed to match an existing piece in the client’s collection.
