A large abstract artwork deserves a framing design that protects the original while giving its colour, texture and scale room to shine. For this recent Brisbane custom framing project, Jubilee Framers created a refined presentation for an original abstract artwork on paper supplied by Comax Australia.
The finished piece measures approximately 1345 × 690 mm, making it an impressive panoramic feature for a residential or commercial interior.
Creating Balance Around a Colourful Abstract Artwork
The artwork combines warm pinks, ochres and creams with expressive teal, red and charcoal details. Strong vertical forms run through the composition, giving the piece rhythm and structure.
We selected a restrained framing combination that supports these elements without competing with them. The dark outer frame connects naturally with the charcoal forms in the artwork, while the white mat creates breathing space around the energetic surface.
A Charcoal-Stained Hardwood Frame
We framed the artwork in a medium-width, flat hardwood moulding with a charcoal stain. The visible timber grain adds subtle texture, while the dark finish gives the completed piece a strong contemporary edge.
Rather than introducing another decorative colour, the charcoal frame draws from tones already present in the artwork. This approach helps unify the overall presentation and makes the brighter colours feel even more vibrant.
A Generous White Mat for Visual Space
We cut a custom Alpha Matte White matboard with generous borders around the artwork. The side and top margins measure approximately 60 mm, with a slightly deeper 70 mm lower border.
This carefully proportioned mat performs several important roles. It separates the artwork visually from the dark frame, creates a clean transition between the image and its surroundings, and prevents the finished presentation from feeling crowded.
The subtle extra weight beneath the artwork also helps the composition appear optically centred when displayed on a wall.
Carefully Framing the Original Artwork on Paper
Because the client supplied an original work on paper, our framing team hinged the artwork rather than permanently bonding it to a rigid substrate. We then fitted it with plain glass, a mat spacer and a 5 mm foamcore backing system.
This method keeps the artwork securely presented while respecting the nature of the original paper piece. Every component works together to maintain a clean, stable and professionally finished result.
A Contemporary Statement Piece
The completed frame measures approximately 1345 mm wide by 690 mm high. Its elongated proportions make it ideal for positioning above a console, sideboard, sofa or other wide architectural feature.
The final design feels bold without becoming heavy. The charcoal hardwood frame anchors the artwork, while the crisp white mat allows the detailed colour and texture to remain the focus.
The client chose to collect this large frame together with a second framing project once both pieces were ready.
