Conservation Framing Project by Jubilee Framers, Brisbane
At Jubilee Framers, we regularly work with delicate and historically significant artworks. This recent project involved the restoration and custom framing of a large vintage German map—an intricate and visually striking piece that required both technical care and conservation expertise.
Assessing the Condition of the Artwork
When the map arrived at our Kelvin Grove studio, it already showed signs of age and handling. Most notably, there was an existing tear running through the artwork. Due to the thin, fragile nature of the original paper stock, this posed a challenge for both mounting and presentation.
Our team carefully assessed the condition and determined the best approach to stabilise and preserve the piece while maintaining its visual integrity.
Precision Mounting for Fragile Artwork
We carried out a careful mounting process to support the artwork evenly across its surface. However, due to the original tear, slight movement occurred during mounting. While we minimised this as much as possible, the tear remained visible.
Given the paper’s fragility, attempting to reposition the area further risked causing additional damage. Instead, we shifted to a conservation-led solution.
Hand Retouching for Seamless Presentation
To improve the final appearance, we carried out delicate hand retouching along the tear line. This process helped visually integrate the damaged section back into the artwork without compromising its authenticity.
This work was undertaken by our team member Aina, who brings a strong background in conservation framing. Her expertise ensured the retouching was sympathetic, precise, and appropriate for the artwork.
Custom Framing with a Clean, Contemporary Finish
Once the restoration was complete, we framed the map using a clean white frame that complements the artwork without overpowering it. The design choice enhances the map’s detail while keeping the focus on the artwork itself.
We also used high-quality glazing to protect the piece from dust, handling, and environmental factors—ensuring its longevity for years to come.
The Final Result
The finished piece is a beautifully restored and professionally framed vintage map that balances preservation with presentation. The tear has been significantly reduced in visibility, and the artwork now displays as a cohesive, striking feature piece.
