Conservation Framing

Museum-Grade Preservation for Your Most Valueable Assets

At Jubilee Framers, we believe that framing is about more than just aesthetics—it is about protection. Conservation Framing (also known as Museum Framing) is the practice of using scientifically tested materials and techniques to ensure an artwork remains in its original condition for a lifetime.

Whether you are protecting a 19th-century family document, a high-value investment painting, or a delicate textile, our Kelvin Grove workshop uses international conservation standards to shield your items from environmental damage.

The Enemies of Your Artwork

Without professional conservation framing, artworks are subject to slow, irreversible decay caused by:

Our Conservation Standards

We adhere to the highest industry standards to provide a “micro-environment” for your art:

1. 99% UV Protective Glazing

We exclusively recommend Tru Vue® Conservation Clear or Museum Glass. These options block 99% of harmful UV rays, ensuring that signatures and vibrant colours stay true even in bright Queensland homes.

3. Reversible Mounting Techniques

A key rule of conservation is "reversibility." We use Japanese tissue hinges, archival photo corners, or specialized Mylar mounts. This ensures that the artwork can be removed from the frame in the future without a trace of damage.

2. 100% Cotton Rag & Alpha-Cellulose Mats

We use only "acid-free" and "lignin-free" matboards. Unlike standard mats, these are chemically stable and act as a buffer to neutralize atmospheric pollutants.

4. Sealed Backing & Spacers

We ensure that the artwork never touches the glass directly by using internal spacers. The back of the frame is finished with a moisture-resistant barrier to protect against Brisbane’s humidity.

What Requires Conservation Framing?

Original Art:

Watercolours, pastels, and sketches.

Historic Documents:

Birth certificates, land titles, and vintage maps.

Limited Edition Prints:

Signed lithographs and etchings.

Sentimental Heirlooms:

War medals, antique lace, and family bibles.

Not every item requires museum-grade intervention, but for pieces of high sentimental or financial value, conservation framing is essential. It is the gold standard for items that are physically delicate or susceptible to environmental decay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many "acid-free" mats are treated with chemicals that eventually wear off. "Conservation" grade materials (like 100% Cotton Rag) are naturally acid-free and will never become acidic, providing permanent protection.
