Jubilee Framers recently completed a custom framing project for Brisbane Racing Club, creating and updating a collection of framed photographic artworks celebrating some memorable moments in Queensland racing.
The project combined professional photographic printing, custom picture framing, precision mat cutting and caption presentation, with each finished piece designed to sit comfortably alongside the Club’s existing collection.
The completed artworks included new framed presentations for Broadsiding, winner of the 2024 Group 1 JJ Atkins, and Spirit of Boom, winner of the 2014 Group 1 Doomben 10,000. We also updated existing framed pieces for Spicy Martini, winner of the 2026 Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap, and Dalrello.
Creating a Consistent Framed Collection
When we work on an established collection, consistency matters.
Rather than treating each photograph as a standalone frame, our team considered the proportions, image presentation, matting and caption layout used throughout the Brisbane Racing Club display.
For the new pieces, we prepared the racing photographs in black and white, carefully adjusting the crops to create strong compositions before producing matching caption panels beneath each image. During the proofing stage, we also refined the crop of the Spirit of Boom photograph to bring the horses closer into the composition.
The finished Broadsiding and Spirit of Boom frames use a clean black picture frame with a wide light-coloured matboard, giving the photographs plenty of visual space while keeping the overall presentation contemporary and professional.
A separate caption window below each photograph records the horse and its racing achievement, creating a display that works particularly well for a corporate boardroom, racing club, sporting organisation or memorabilia collection.
Updating Existing Custom Frames
The project also demonstrates an important part of professional picture framing that clients sometimes overlook: an existing frame can often be updated rather than completely replaced.
For the Spicy Martini artwork, Jubilee Framers prepared a replacement photograph and caption before receiving the existing frame. This allowed our framers to minimise the amount of time the piece needed to be away from Brisbane Racing Club’s boardroom. We then opened the frame, replaced the required elements and refitted the presentation.
We also completed a caption correction to the existing Dalrello frame.
Where practical, this type of picture frame refurbishment and artwork refitting can maintain the character of an established collection while updating photographs, captions or other presentation details.
From Traditional Framing to Contemporary Presentation
The photographs from the completed project show how a collection can evolve over time.
The existing Dalrello presentation features a more traditional timber frame, gold inner detail and dark green matboard, while the newer racing photographs use a much more contemporary black-and-white presentation.
Both approaches demonstrate how custom framing can complement the period, setting and purpose of an artwork rather than forcing every piece into the same style.
For the newer Brisbane Racing Club pieces, the restrained black frames and generous neutral matting allow the photographic subjects to command attention. The monochrome racing imagery also gives the collection a timeless, archival feel.
