Preserving Local History: Custom Framing for St George Hospital’s Maternity Wing Tribute

A recent project for St George Hospital offered a unique opportunity to document and preserve the rich history of their former maternity ward — the “Tibby” Ryan Memorial Maternity Wing.

A Tribute to Generations of Care

When St George Hospital approached us with a vision to commemorate the decommissioned maternity building, we knew it required more than just standard framing. The goal was to create a striking, museum-grade display that would combine architectural heritage, historic signage, and visual storytelling — all preserved for future generations to appreciate.

The Custom Framing Process

This complex piece was designed and assembled in our Kelvin Grove studio and includes:

  • A high-resolution photographic print of the original building

  • Detailed architectural drawings of the maternity ward

  • A mounted panel of the original engraved metal signage

  • A section of reclaimed timber from the original structure

  • A printed didactic panel explaining the historical context

Using custom shadow box framing techniques, we float-mounted each element on acid-free materials and enclosed the entire work behind UV-protective glazing to ensure longevity and clarity. The result is an elegant and educational display that now serves as a focal point within the hospital.
